Our scope
What does 'information and rights guidance' mean?
Two similar-sounding things are very different in the UK: explaining published information, and advising you on your own legal position. This page explains which one we do.
Our service is designed to help you understand information relevant to your situation. We explain publicly available rules, procedures and guidance in plain English and help you identify possible next steps.
We do not provide legal advice or representation. If your situation requires regulated legal advice or representation, we will make this clear and encourage you to seek an appropriately authorised professional.
Information and guidance
Information and guidance means explaining what published sources — legislation, regulations, government guidance and regulator publications — actually say, and how a published process is intended to work. It is general, it is sourced, and anyone can go and read the same material afterwards.
Legal advice
Legal advice means applying the law to your specific circumstances and telling you what your legal position is or what you should do about it. That is a different activity, carried out by appropriately authorised professionals, and it is not what Legara Rights provides.
How you will know the difference in a session
We will explain what the published information says and what routes appear to exist. We will not tell you that you are legally entitled to something, that a claim will succeed, or what decision you should take. Where a question can only properly be answered by a regulated professional, we will say so.
Under review
This wording and the service scope should be reviewed by a suitably qualified UK legal/regulatory professional before launch. REQUIRES PROFESSIONAL LEGAL/REGULATORY REVIEW BEFORE LAUNCH.
Our scope
Being clear about what this service is
Legara Rights is not a law firm and is not a firm of solicitors. Knowing exactly where our help begins and ends helps you decide whether we are the right starting point.
We can help you
- Understand publicly available legal information
- Understand general rights and procedures
- Understand official correspondence
- Identify relevant information and sources
- Understand terminology
- Understand possible procedural routes
- Prepare questions for a regulated professional
- Find appropriate official or regulated sources of further assistance
We do not
- Provide legal advice
- Give formal legal opinions
- Act as your solicitor
- Represent you
- Conduct litigation
- Represent you in court or tribunals
- Provide regulated immigration advice unless separately authorised
- Guarantee an entitlement, claim or outcome
If your situation needs legal advice, a formal opinion or representation, we will say so and encourage you to approach an appropriately authorised professional or a relevant official service.
Why this service?
Sometimes you don't need a solicitor yet. You need clarity first.
The internet contains an enormous amount of legal and rights information. Very little of it is written for the person actually living through the situation.
This is a human, personalised information and rights-guidance service. It does not replace Citizens Advice, and it does not replace a solicitor. It is another option for people who want focused, one-to-one help understanding the information relevant to their situation.
What people usually struggle with
- Which information is relevant to your situation
- What the terminology actually means
- Which procedure applies to you
- What information or evidence you need
- What your possible next steps are
Not sure where to start? Tell us what happened.
Describe your situation in your own words. We will let you know whether an information and guidance session would help, or whether you would be better served by an appropriately authorised professional or official service.
